This set comes with everything that a child needs to feel like a great explorer. The binoculars are child sized and work well, the little flashlight is cute and hank cranked, which is great for 2 reasons, it keeps the child busy and eliminates the fussing when the batteries die! That is a real plus! The compass is nice, it is plastic, but plenty durable. The magnifying glass is just a small plastic magnifier, but works well for looking at insects and leaves or anything else that an explorer would need to look at! Of course, we cannot forget about the whistle! It works great and if you are out for a quiet day of exploring, you may want to accidentally/on purpose forget it at home. If not, don't expect a peacefu outing because it definately will keep your child busy! However, you will not have to worry about your child getting lost in the woods and that is the big plus on the whistle! All of this comes with a nice carrying bag that fits like a backpack. This set offers so many learning opportunities, not only with nature, but science, in general! Think of the possibilities. What makes the flashlight work? How can you see things far away or up close with the binoculars and magnifier? How does a compass work and why? And my favorite.... How do you start a fire with the magnifying glass! You may not want to go there, however, it is extremely neat! I can think of many more, but my point is, this is a great teaching kit! There are so many different things to do with it! I would definately purchase this again!
